Next week the world will be celebrating Valentine’s Day; a day that can make a lot of us feel left out if we are not in a relationship as defined by our culture. There seems to be some unwritten rule that says we all have to be paired up to find happiness.
As luck would have it, I stumbled upon this beautiful song this morning. (see link below) It’s called “Just Like the First Time.” Engelbert Humperdinck is crooning on about how he fell in love at seventeen with this gal he asked to dance, and while the relationship did not last, he is still in love with her all these years later. He is trapped in unrequited "never to happen love," but he wishes her to fall in love just like the first time her whole life.
The romantic image this conjures up could be akin to what we see in movies like “The Way We Were.” Not a place I want to be stuck – secretly longing for a love that can never be.
What I see in my mind is an adult seeing their own face of “innocence” their own face of "love" when they fell in love for the very first time with .......... their own foot. We have all seen a baby discover their own foot for the first time. The joy that have at meeting this beautiful amazing thing; not understanding it’s a part of them, and watch them as they fall in love with it over and over again - every day they rediscover it. How about they day the figure out they have fingers, or when they are a little older, they see Micky Mouse for the first time in complete amazement. There is no hate or malice towards anyone or anything at this time in our lives. It’s just pure love. That is what I see when I hear this song; that is what I see in my mind as he smoothly croons the lyrics. Not a man and a woman, but a baby’s own love for its own amazing foot.
So how about instead of feeling sad for our single selves on Valentine's Day – we look at YouTube video’s of cute babies doing cute things from a place of complete love of self and complete wonderment of the world around them. I noticed even Hershey Kisses is getting on board with this day being inclusive for all of us with their newest commercial. Check it out if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s a giant step in the right direction.
